Chapter 1.
"I have got to get out of here. This is hell," Gem said as she observed the so-called party she attended. It was supposedly started at 8.00 P.M and about 60 people were invited. It was 11.34 P.M and so far only 10 showed up. All of them, from the Chess Club.
She knew it was a bad idea when Cole; a Chess Club geek turned jock with just a blink of an eye invited the cool people to a party. It was all the rage at school, oh yeah it was, until word got out he invited the Chess Club.
Gem didn't know why she was so confident that the Chess Club wasn't gonna ruin the party. She didn't know why she was certain that her friends would come and show Cole how to party hard.. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. She just didn't have the capacity. She was in the corner of the room, holding her drink with both hands, feeling lethargic. And most importantly, none of her friends showed up. Some friends they were.
Without any minute to spare she grabbed her designer bag and quickly made an exit for the back door. As soon as she was greeted by the darkness she ran as quickly as she can from being caught committing social suicide.
10 minutes later and she was walking down the streets of Upper East Side of Manhattan, sweat free. She clutched her gem stone necklace her grandmother gave her when she was 5 in her hand. She hated running while wearing it in fear of it might falling off.
As she was walking along the streets, she suddenly saw someone that sent jolts through her spine. She just couldn't believe her luck. Mark was loitering around in front of apartment building. He was wearing some old jeans and a The Fall Of Troy tee. Confidently, she walked towards the gate trying not to pay attention to him. That was until he grabbed her arm pulling her into a hug.
Her head was held against his chest. His smell was foul; it smelled of alcohol, but she didn't mind. His unsteady body was supported by her's but it didn't matter. His hands were digging into her flesh but she didn't care.
-
For a second there I though all the planets were all aligned and fireworks were displaying all over the world. I was too preoccupied that Mark is hugging me that I can't really tell what he's saying.
But when I finally can make out what he's saying, then it hit my head.
"Heidi, please, don't do this to me."
As he spoke I felt as if those words are beating me to the ground. God, what am I supposed to do? I can't leave him here. I can't imagine him waking up tomorrow finding himself here.
Oh god, give me strength, physically. Mark is not the lanky boy I used to spend my summers with anymore. Oh god, here I go.
-
And there Gem went bringing Mark to her apartment with all her strength. Margaret, the maid helped Gem laid him down on her couch. Now she started to mind the foul smell. She left him on the couch, and he started to doze off slowly. She waited until she was sure he was deep in sleep and laid a blanket on him.
Without hesitation she entered her room, and locked the door. She sat down on her bed, still trying to register what just happened.
-
God Mark, so what if Heidi kissed Ethan, she's not yours. So what if she spent a night at his place? You're not entitled to control her life. I should be the one drunk. I should be the one with the foul smell, sleeping in your living room.
I don't deserve this.
-
Mark woke the next morning greeted by a blurry yellow image. He realized it a was a Post-It stuck to his forehead. He removed it and flipped it over to see Gem's handwriting.
"You're an asshole."
He smirked and tried to rise only to be slapped by a headache. It must have been the alcohol.
